Artsy Accents
by Scott Salwolke
It used to be that when people went to a gallery to purchase a particular piece of art they admired. Now, however, many homeowners are realizing art is a great way to accent a room. Which could mean the artwork they prefer is not necessarily the best choice for a particular room.
“The biggest thing is people should buy what they like,” explains Mike Kaesbauer of Creative Touch Gallery. “Second, take a look at the room itself. What is the color of the room? Is it a big room or a small? Is it open to other areas where people see the room from different vantage points? It helps us to advise a person if we can see the room, even if its just through a digital photograph.”
Michele Hefel of A Frame of Mind agrees.
“You want something that goes with the color scheme of a room or perhaps a theme you're using. If you're having a tropical theme for a room, you want art that reflects that. You may like a particular piece of art, but does it go with your room? It may be that another piece of art works better in your room.
How your artwork is framed is also something to consider. A piece of art can have a completely different feel depending on the matting and the frame. And can either blend with a room or stand out in an unflattering manner.
Nor should you simply focus on paintings.
You don't just want some pictures behind glass and frame,” explains Kaesbauer. “Mix your mediums. Put some canvas art in there. Put some metal art in there. Put some three dimensional art in there. Add some floral and sconces to soften it and add texture.
Not everything should be horizontal or vertical. Take each room individually and try to come up with a nice balance.”
With so many details going into the decor of a room, including the artwork, it might help to bring in a professional.
“People are too busy with their work and families anymore,” explains Lisa Parr, a decorator at Vignettes. “They rely on us to bring them ideas for the home, including art and décor. And this not only saves them time, but exposes them to things they might not have thought of themselves.”
As with any work to be done on a home, budget is also a factor in choosing your art.
“At first you may only be able to afford posters of art for a room,” said Hefel. “Then you might begin to expand and spend hundreds of dollars for a limited edition print. And then, finally you could begin buying original works of art.”
Having an open mind in making your choice is also helpful.
“A lot of people come in generally with an idea of what they want to do,” said Kaesbauer.
“The fun part of our job is trying to show them two or three other options they hadn't thought of. And most of the time they're thankful for these suggestions. Because what they came in with is probably too much like the rest of the room. It's probably too safe. If they challenge themselves they end up appreciating the work longer.”
