Guidelines Transporting People With Disabilities
Basic Communication Guidelines For People Who Are Mentally Handicapped:
A. Treat people with disabilities as you would like to be treated in the same situation.
B. Be patient.
C. Ask the person what type of assistance they need.
D. Use simple words
E. Avoid using slang or jargon everybody might not be familiar with.
F. Use exact phrases (e.g. "Do you have $4.75?" instead of "Do you have the right amount of money to buy your theater ticket?")
G. Repeat back to the person what they have said if you’re not sure you understood them correctly.
H. Use communication aids including sign language and pictures to give and obtain information on what the person needs assistance with.
I. Smile, be patient, and be prepared to answer questions more than once.
Guidelines for persons with visual impairments.
J. Ask the person what type of assistance they need.
K. If you guide a person with a visual impairment, let them take your arm (usually at the elbow); do not grab or hold on to their arms.
L. Always greet the person verbally and identify yourself.
M. When handing something to the person, always place it directly in their hand.
N. Verbal directions should be simple (e.g. "turn left," or "turn right," etc.)
O. Warn the person of potential hazards in the environment such as obstacles or if they need to duck their head.
Guidelines for people with mobility impairments.
P. Ask the person what they of assistance is needed and how you may provide it.
Q. Never grab a person who uses a can or a walker by the arm.
R. Always ask a person if they are ready to go before you begin assisting them.
S. Generally face a person who uses a wheelchair forward while going up a ramp or curb, but take them down a curb or ramp backward. Thus you'll always be on the down side of the chair and be better able to control its movement. This helps to prevent any potential accidents.
T. Warn the person of potential hazards in the environment as you move them
