PageRank
PageRank (PR) is the value Google gives to a page, based on its content and the number of incoming links that are considered to be authoritative. The numbers range from 0-10. A site's PageRank can change constantly. What is shown on a toolbar is a snapshot of a site's PageRank at one particular moment and could very well be out of date in a few days. The PR listed for a site on a toolbar is updated only every 3-4 months.
Most visitors to a web site have no knowledge of its PageRank or even know what it means. Yet, if its a site they regularly visit for information chances are it has a high PageRank. For example two sites I have bookmarked , the Weather channel and ESPN, each have a PageRank of 8 demonstrating their authority.
If a site has no PageRank, however, it doesn't mean the site doesn't have value. It simply could be new.
In performing my link building services I first look for sites that have a high PR as the PR from these links from these sites seep down into the page they link to. If a page has lots of links to a lots of different pages, however, the value of the votes are diluted, making each vote worth less. And if the site uses a “nofollow” attribute on their links, then these don't pass on any PR. It doesn't mean the link has no value however. Wikipedia uses no follow, but a link from them could certainly bring traffic to a site. |
